How does a wireless keyboard work

How does a wireless keyboard work

A wireless keyboard is a handy tool for your PC or Laptop. It makes it easy to do your work faster. With wireless, it is easy to move around while you are working. It can be beneficial for people who are always on the go.

If you are thinking of getting one; then you are probably wondering how a wireless keyboard works. You are also probably wondering if it will work with your computer, if it has the right features, and if it has excellent quality.

Wireless keyboards use radio frequency (RF) signals like remote controls for TVs and wireless mice.

There are two different RF technologies used in modern keyboards: Bluetooth and Logitech Unifying Technology.

Both of these technologies work very similarly, so today, we will only discuss the latter one.

Table of Contents

  • Logitech Unifying Technology
    • Pros:
    • Cons:
  • Conclusion:

Logitech Unifying Technology

Logitech Unifying Technology uses the same receiver as their Mice. So you can plug it into your laptop via USB stick or place it right underneath your notebook’s keyboard if it is exposed.

This receiver then connects to both mouse and keyboard simultaneously with a unique PIN generated randomly – hence why this technology is called “Unifying.” This technology uses a 2.4 GHz signal to transmit information between devices, the same as many other wireless devices.

If this frequency bothers you (it mostly depends on your location), you can either change it to one of those four available “channels” and use an RF jammer.

By default, the Logitech Unifying receiver uses Radio Frequency Media Control or RCMC for short.

What it does is that it sends information about buttons pressed by the user to the keyboard, and simultaneously the keyboard starts transmitting data back about its state – if caps lock is enabled or not, if num lock indicator light is ON or not, etc.

For this whole process to work correctly with a reliable connection without any packet loss between devices, two different keys must be pressed in a particular order: Fn and Esc; when pressed together, those two buttons signal that both devices (keyboard and receiver) are ready to accept and process information. And this is it – your wireless keyboard works!

Pros:

Wireless keyboards are great for those that don’t like to be tied down to a desk. I use one when I’m on the couch to watch TV or if I want to do some writing work with my notebook computer. You can move with them pretty much anywhere in the house with the freedom of not having to plug into an outlet. It also gives freedom of movement to use it outside with your laptop computer.

Cons:

With the freedom of not being tied down to an outlet comes the liberty of freedom of not being tied down with the release of the privilege of having to use batteries. I hate constantly replacing batteries. But, if you continuously use it, this is an issue with all wireless devices.

Conclusion:

We are sure that you have used wireless keyboards before. If you have never used one, you are missing out on a lot. It is a great way to reduce the clutter on your desk. Wireless keyboards are easy to use. A wireless keyboard transmits the signal to the computer using radio waves.

Radio waves are invisible waves that can travel long distances without any obstacles—the computer powers wireless keyboards. The computer draws the energy from the wireless keyboard to send the signals out. Now that you know how a wireless keyboard works, go out and get your own.
